The ELA standard encompass a broad range of standards to set up future generations for success. These standards teach students to write, speak, and be literate in a multitude of subjects. For example a standard set for 11th and 12th graders is that they should be able to determine the meaning of different words or phrases. I would be prepared to help them achieve this standard because I know how to teach them to use context clues when figuring out the meaning of words. I am also capable of teaching them about resources they can use to look up words such as dictionaries and glossaries.
One of the resources I chose from the 9-12th grade tool kit is the standards for social studies. One of the standards I would implement in my own classroom is teaching them to use timelines to identify historical data. I think this important because it will teach students what caused historical events and what these events caused after. Teaching students how to visualize historical events also will help them retain the material for the future.
Being proficient at searching the internet is important for several reasons. As an educator this skill will allow you to find pertinent information for yourself and students. It also allows teachers to find the best information out there to convey to their students. A skill that is very important is knowing how to find specific file types and excluding certain words from your searches. There are no other particular skills that I use that were talked about this week.
Hi Riley!
ReplyDeleteI think that's a super important standard as well, I can't tell you how many times I've had to figure out what words mean on the fly purely with context, lol. I liked the resource you chose as well! I plan on teaching history myself, and I always stress the importance of being able to actually place events on a timeline, and understanding how events lead to one another. It makes it all much easier to understand when you can kind of picture it in your head like that.
hi riley. I agree that the ELA standards are important and they do set up our future generations. I noticed that you chose social studies and I cant agree more that this subject needs more attention. reading can be tedious to some students and being able to visualize history facts can make it fun to learn.
ReplyDeleteHey, Riley!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog! I agree with you that the standard of being able to determine the meaning of different words or phrases is super important, especially for 11th and 12th graders as they are most likely in AP level classes and will have to read more complex literature. I also agree with you that being a proficient internet searcher as a teacher is important. Internet proficiency allows teachers to be able to find the resources that they need to help their students succeed both inside and outside of the classroom and is a super helpful skill to have when entering the teaching field. Great post!
