Copyright is used by people to protect their individual work. It forces others to get your permission to use your work or share it. If you are using someones work you have to make sure you get their permission or give them credit. Fair use is a way to use someones copyrighted work without getting permission. However, there is specific situations when this is allowed. These instances include; schoolwork, news reports, when you are commenting, and when you are using it for a parody. For fair use to be allowed a person must give new meaning to the work and add their own ideas to it; they also must not profit off of the work. As an educator I would be sure to explain these concepts in detail to my class to ensure they understand that it is unacceptable to take credit for others work and that there are legal ramifications for those actions. I would be sure to give credit to authors when using their works and make sure I am following all of the rules of copyright and fair use laws.
With the use of technology in classrooms growing exponentially each year there are several issues that need to be addressed. The first is academic dishonesty which can be a big problem for students if there is no explanation for why this is wrong. A way that I would try to stop dishonesty is by giving students good lessons with all the materials they need so they feel comfortable with the material and therefore have no reason to cheat. Another tactic I would try is explaining to them that having integrity and trying to do tasks on their own builds character and makes people better. The second issued that needs to be addressed is decreased productivity. To solve this issue I would ensure that when students used technology they have to think comprehensively at the task at hand and not just go through the motions of clicking buttons and submitting assignments. Getting them to work with peers and other people would encourage them to be more productive.
The newsletter assignment put me out of my comfort zone because I have never used so many different feature of Microsoft Word. It took a lot of time for me to figure things out but now knowing how to make column breaks, spacing the document correctly, and adding pictures and word art can really go a long way in making my work look a lot better. I could make my newsletter by spacing it better to make it look more uniform and by making my banner look better. Skills learned from this assignment can be used in just about every career, but as a teacher I will use them a lot. Being able to create a good looking and well put together document to hand out to students and parents will allow them to understand points I am trying to get across
and make it easier to read.
Hi, Riley!
ReplyDeleteI first wanted to say that I think your newsletter came out beautifully. I like the colors you used, as well as how cohesive the design looks as a whole. I, too, definitely felt like I was stepping out of my comfort zone while I was completing this project. I am more of a Google Docs user, hence why exploring Word and all of its features was pretty frightening. Still, I agree that it is nice to now know how to manipulate the features a little more. I, for one, feel better about my Microsoft Word skills/knowledge!
Hi Riley!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your approaches towards decreased productivity and academic dishonesty. Both are challenging issues in the classroom, and I would definitely do the same thing that you suggested. I also really like your newsletter (looks much better than mine haha), and it really feels like an actual school newsletter! I like the images you used to make it really pop off as well as the colors you used to make it stand out.
